Marcus sits down for his third meeting before 9am on a Monday and tells himself he's just tired today. That's the same thing he said last Monday. And the Monday before that. He's not writing any of it down, so the "just today" framing holds each time. Nothing repeats officially. Nothing is being tracked.

In August 2026, researchers at the University of Oslo published findings in Nature Neuroscience from a study that tracked cognitively healthy older adults with repeated MRI scans across nearly 20 years. The question: when do brain changes associated with Alzheimer's actually begin? What they found: measurable structural shifts, specifically changes in the rate of cortical thinning in key regions, appeared at least 7 years before amyloid plaques became visible on a PET scan.

The amyloid PET scan is the gold standard for Alzheimer's detection. It missed a 7-year window.

Coverage focused, reasonably, on what this means for early diagnosis: catch it earlier, intervene earlier. That's the medical story. But there's a second implication sitting underneath it that the study didn't and couldn't measure. Whether those same 7 years also contained behavioral or emotional signals. Whether the accumulation was showing up somewhere else, in how those people described their weeks, their moods, their tolerance for certain conversations, and nobody had set up an instrument to read it.

The researchers tracked cortical thickness. Nobody was tracking how those people felt on Sunday evenings.

This is how invisible accumulation works in behavior. Something begins repeating below the level you'd consciously call a pattern. You're more irritable before the 9am Monday meeting than you were a year ago. A specific colleague's name in your inbox changes what you can concentrate on for the next hour. A particular kind of conversation leaves you needing a long walk to feel like yourself again. None of this is dramatic. Each instance has its own explanation in the moment: you didn't sleep well, the commute was bad, January is always hard.

The pattern is in the repetition. The problem is that repetition is invisible without a record.

Memory doesn't work like a database. You remember the hard day; you don't automatically remember that this specific type of day has been hard 13 times over the last four months. You remember being irritable; you don't retain the fact that the irritability correlates with a particular project type, nearly every time. The brain builds narrative around individual moments. It does not surface recurring structures across them. That's not a failure of attention; it's a gap in the instrument.
